Ride to Port Alberni (and ferry beyond)

A four-day solo cycling trip to Port Alberni and back. A side-trip to Bamfield via the ferry “Frances Barkley” of Lady Rose Marine Services.

Heavy car traffic is unavoidable until you leave Nanaimo center. The rest of the road to Port Alberni is pretty much all uphill. Before the last 5k drop, there is an equally long steep climb. Port Alberni is an almost-but-not-quite ghost-town, surviving on logging. Lady Rose Marine Services is the best attraction. It has a daily ferry service making the rounds between Port Alberni and all the wonderful places around Broken Group Islands, as far as Bamfield and Ucluelet. I chose to go to Bamfield, because 1) that’s the only destination that fit my schedule, 2) I wanted to revisit the place where we ended our West Coast Trail hike many years ago. Next time, I am definitely heading for a kayaking trip to Broken Group. LRMS has a lodge on one of the islands with kayak rentals…
